1 - Teledentistry in Schools: An Innovative Way to Expand School-Based Health Programs

Abstract:

Objectives: School-based oral health programs (SBOHPs) aim to overcome common barriers to care, such as transportation and scheduling conflicts, to ensure fair access for communities with limited dental services. The integration of teledentistry enhances these efforts by improving efficiency, staff flexibility, and removing traditional barriers to care. This session explores the development and implementation of school-based teledentistry (SBT) programs, with a focus on Virginia Health Catalyst’s 2024 School-Based Health Alliance Teledentistry Playbook.

Methods: Virginia Health Catalyst collaborated with the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Health to create state-specific learning modules, technical assistance resources, and quality improvement strategies. These tools are designed to support dental safety-net clinics and school nurses, aligning with telehealth policies and individual school needs, to facilitate the delivery of oral health services even in the absence of an on-site dentist.

Results: The use of these tailored tools has enabled the successful implementation of SBT programs in Virginia schools. Key outcomes include improved access to oral health services through prevention and treatment, enhanced care coordination, effective data utilization, and increased patient engagement, even in areas with limited dental services.

Conclusions: The session will provide strategies for expanding SBT programs in other school communities, drawing on Virginia’s experiences. Attendees will gain actionable insights into improving access to dental care, ultimately leading to better oral health outcomes for students.
