Abstract:Objectives. Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease affecting US school-aged children, posing significant public health challenges. In line with recommendations from the 2021 WHO Resolution on Oral Health, the program integrates oral health promotion within a health curriculum in a community-based setting. This work aims to compare self-reported attitudes and behaviors of youth participants related to oral health- activities, self-esteem, school involvement, nutrition, exercise, and family support before and after completion of the 12-week Soccer for Success pilot program.
Methods. Oral health education was integrated into the curriculum of eight education-focused sessions. A survey was developed and completed by the participants after attending the program, consisting of 26 questions regarding participant demographics, behavioral characteristics, and attitudes regarding oral health-related activities, self-esteem, school involvement, nutrition, exercise, and family support. Changes in attitudes and behaviors were measured using a retrospective pre-post design.
Results. A total of 143 student participants in 3rd through 6th grade completed the survey. Statistically significant differences (P < 0.01) were observed for all pre-post program comparisons, including self-reported attitudes and behaviors related to oral health activities and positive changes in self-esteem. There were no statistically significant results by gender or grade in school.
Conclusion. Oral health education delivered by coach-mentor role models was shown to effectively promote positive behaviors and improve knowledge among student-athletes. A structured health education program combined with engaging activities provides school-aged children with a safe environment for socialization and play, contributing to lifelong benefits for their health and well-being.
