Description: Community-based clinical experiences are critical components of predoctoral and allied dental students’ educational experiences. Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards defines community-based experiences as “opportunities to provide patient care in community-based clinics or private practices.” Academic programs must provide opportunities for students to participate in these experiences to help develop the necessary skills for treating a variety of patients. This roundtable will present various factors to consider when determining whether to establish a partnership (e.g. vetting partners, financial arrangements, placement, and experience expectations). It will also review CODA requirements. The discussion will examine the viewpoints of the academic institution, the community partner, and the student in determining what constitutes a positive learning experience.
