Description: In 2018, Public Act 463, establishing dental therapy (DT) was signed into law in Michigan. This workforce model was introduced to address disparities in poor oral health outcomes and gaps in access to oral health services across the state, particularly within dental provider shortage areas and low-income populations. To support the implementation of DT in Michigan, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Oral Health Program (MDHHS OHP) was awarded a HRSA grant in 2022. This led to the development of the Michigan Oral Health Workforce Innovation Network (MI-OHWIN).
Although there are no DTs currently practicing in the state, a Michigan education institution has committed to offer a DT program for prospective students with an anticipated start date of 2026. The MI-OHWIN is currently providing technical support to facilitate the implementation of a comprehensive and CODA-accredited DT education program in Michigan.
As part of this grant, an electronic survey was sent to all higher education institutions in Michigan to assess their capacity and interest in implementing a DT program. Through this survey, the MDHHS OHP has identified additional partners to provide technical support. Roundtable attendees will focus on the DT survey project to better understand the challenges and barriers education institutions face in the way of developing a DT program. Additionally, attendees will participate in a lively discussion regarding the survey findings and how this may impact other states interested in developing a DT education program. This project is funded by a HRSA grant T12HP46087.
