Is Global Health Public Health? Resident Perspectives and Recommendations

Session Description: The purpose of this interactive workshop is to deliver collaborative guidance and deliberate on whether global health should be a component of DPH residency programs. The target audience includes primarily Dental Public Health residents and secondarily other relevant stakeholders involved with DPH residencies, courses, and/or programmatic requirements. This session will review high-level principles of the UN/WHO global health and development agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals, WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs 2013-2030, the WHO Global Competency Framework for Universal Health Coverage, and the WHO Global Oral Health Action Plan 2023-2030 (specifically academic sector strategy recommendations for achieving pre-determined targets and indicators for oral health globally). Attendees will react to and critique emerging practices for incorporating global health education into DPH curricula and consider how they align with CODA standards. Outcomes, highlighting DPH resident perspectives, will be incorporated into a DPH global health curriculum guide.
