Session Description: This 90-minute session will address the systemic limitations in addressing the oral health care of persons in U.S. correctional facilities. The primary goal is to familiarize participants with the U.S. correctional system and the shortcomings within the dental public health framework that fails to meet the oral health needs of this population. The first speaker will provide an overview of the various correctional facilities-short-term, long-term, and youth-along with current surveillance practices and the challenges associated with accessing care in these settings. The second speaker will delve into the federal prison system's approach to oral health care, including a detailed review of existing policies and procedures. The final speaker will focus on oral health care at the state and local levels. A concluding discussion will examine the potential roles of dental public health practitioners in improving oral health care for incarcerated individuals.
